BRINE V+1 is based on venturi jet
The suction zone is 360° around the narrow section, ensuring a suction capacity of 4 units of volume of ambient seawater to 1 of brine output, multiplying the final flow by five and enhancing the mixing capacity between the brine and the seawater towards the near-field dilution.
Modelling and simulations based on technical studies and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for far and near field mixing predictions, estimate the potential dilution capacity of V+1 in more than 2,3 times higher than conventional diffusers (131% more efficient). (bottom case study)

What are the advantages of Venturi Diffusers in comparison with Duckbill Diffusers?
Venturi-type diffusers as BRINEV+1 benefits from an ingenious way to use the venturi physical effect to greatly increase the dilution of the brine in the marine environment. Due to its internal dilution rate, the use of venturi-diffusers enables a significant reduction of the submarine outfall length while reaching environmental requirements, as well as spacing between the intakes and the outfalls while avoiding re-entrainment. Moreover, achieving all necessary dilutions within the near – field allows for the greatest amount of flexibility in the final outfall location without relying on far-field dispersion.
Could the use of this technology potentially lead to an increase in energy costs?
No, BRINE V+1 doesn’t require extra energy consumption because it is a passive system that doesn’t require pumping that would increase operating expenses (OPEX).
How is the installation process?
Venturi diffusers can be easily installed in both new and existing outfalls. Normally the devices are secured to the seabed with clamps and mooring blocks, preventing leaks or accidental discharges. Also, not having moving parts reduces maintenance costs and guarantees their structural strength (currently we are undertaking tests for BRINEv+1 standardization in high-density polyethylene).
How the solution is designed?
ECOStec experience has allowed the company to specialize in the design of the optimal diffuser system configuration (techno-economically) to each case, including co-discharge with wastewater or cooling water. BRINEV+1 is designed to be adaptable to any discharge flow and pipe diameter.
What is the headloss that the technology could generate, especially at peak flows?
The Brine V+1 diffuser head doesn’t produce load losses added to the system. To achieve the optimal operation of the device is required requires optimal design speed, therefore the diffuser device will produce load losses related to the jet output speed. Brine V+1 provides reducers with a reduction angle of 30° to minimize the losses associated with it and the greater efficiency in dilution allows a shorter length of the diffuser section with an estimated reduction around 1/3 of conventional diffusers.
What are the references of the technology?
The initial optimized prototypes were installed in two desalination plants in Gran Canaria with capacities of 280 l/s and 208 l/s (in operation and maintenance-free since 2012 and 2016, respectively) and consequently ECOS has started the diffuser commercialization in several regions (Latin America, Middle East, Mediterranean Sea, and West Africa) with the first installation of Brine V+1 in Malta (August 2018).
